Why furnaces quit on the first cold night

The first hard freeze of the season produces more no-heat calls than any other night of the year, and it is not because the cold breaks furnaces. It is because the cold is the first thing all year that asks the furnace to prove it still works.

The failure was already there

A furnace in Colorado spends the shoulder season barely working. It runs in short bursts on a cold morning, shuts off by ten, and never gets asked for much. A weak igniter, a flame sensor coated in oxidation, a capacitor on its way out, a pressure switch that is marginal: none of those necessarily stop a furnace from completing a two-minute cycle in October.

Then the temperature drops into the teens and the same furnace is asked to run long cycles, back to back, through the night. That is the first real load it has seen since spring, and it is when the part that was already failing finally quits. This is why the calls arrive in a cluster on the same night across the whole metro rather than spread evenly through the fall. The cold did not cause the failure. It revealed it.

What actually fails, roughly in order

The flame sensor. This is the single most common one. The furnace lights normally, then shuts down about thirty seconds later, and it will often repeat that two or three times before locking out. Oxidation on the sensor means the control board cannot confirm a flame is present, so it closes the gas valve. That is the safety system working correctly. It is also one of the cheapest things on the appliance to put right.

The igniter. Igniters fail from thermal cycling, so they tend to go at the start of a season when the furnace suddenly starts cycling constantly. A furnace that hums and tries but never lights at all is often here.

Airflow, usually the filter. A filter left in since spring restricts airflow enough that the furnace overheats and a limit switch shuts it down to protect itself. The tell is a furnace that runs for a while, gets warm, and then quits, over and over. The wrong filter causes this as readily as a dirty one; a very restrictive filter can starve a system that was never designed for that much resistance.

Condensate, on high-efficiency units. A high-efficiency furnace produces water, and it drains it. If that drain or its trap is blocked, the safety switch shuts the furnace off on purpose. Nothing is broken, but the heat is off until the blockage clears.

The heat exchanger. Rarest of these and the serious one. It is also the reason a gas furnace gets a safety inspection rather than just a performance check, and the reason we look at it and tell you plainly what we see rather than using it as a sales lever.

The Colorado-specific part almost nobody checks

Gas furnaces are rated at sea level. A mile up, the air is roughly twenty percent thinner, and the burner has to be derated for the air it is actually breathing. Left on factory settings it is fed more gas than that air can burn cleanly, which wastes fuel and soots the heat exchanger over time.

The reason this gets skipped so often is that a furnace set up wrong still runs. It heats the house, the homeowner never suspects anything, and the cost shows up quietly on the gas bill and in accelerated wear instead of as an obvious fault. More on our furnace repair service →

What to check before calling anyone

The filter. If you cannot remember changing it, that is the answer often enough to be worth thirty seconds.

The thermostat. Batteries, and that it is set to heat rather than left on cool from summer.

The breaker, and the furnace switch. Most furnaces have their own service switch near the unit that looks exactly like a light switch. It gets flipped by accident more often than you would guess, usually by someone carrying something down the basement stairs.

The condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace, if you can see standing water near the unit.

Common questions

Why did my furnace work fine in October and fail the first freezing night?
Because the fault was usually already there. A furnace can run through mild weather in short bursts and never be pushed hard enough to expose a weak igniter, a dirty flame sensor or a marginal capacitor. The first hard cold snap is the first time it runs long and often, and that is when a part that was already failing finally stops. The cold did not break it. The cold found it.
What is the most common reason a furnace lights and then shuts off after about thirty seconds?
Oxidation on the flame sensor. The furnace lights normally, the sensor fails to confirm the flame is actually there, and the control board shuts the gas off as a safety response. It looks alarming and it is usually one of the cheapest things on the appliance to put right. Resurfacing the sensor is a standard part of a tune-up, which is why that particular call is so preventable.
Is it dangerous to keep restarting a furnace that shuts itself off?
Repeatedly resetting a furnace that is shutting down on its own is not a good idea. The shutdown is usually a safety control doing its job, and forcing it to try again does not address why the control tripped. If it happens more than once, get it looked at instead of cycling the power on it.
Does Colorado altitude actually affect a furnace?
Yes, and it is the most commonly skipped step in the state. Gas furnaces are rated at sea level and have to be derated for the thinner air at Front Range elevation. And the condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace, because a blocked one will shut the system off deliberately.
Is a tune-up worth it, or is it just an upsell?
It is worth it on a gas appliance specifically because of the safety half. A tune-up is a carbon monoxide check and a heat exchanger inspection first, and a performance check second. The things that leave a family without heat on the coldest night of the year are nearly all cheaper to find in September than to fix in January.
My furnace is over twenty years old. Should I just replace it now?
Not automatically. Age alone is not a verdict, and igniters, flame sensors, capacitors and pressure switches are all replaceable on an old furnace. A failed heat exchanger is the one that genuinely ends it. You should get the repair number and the replacement number side by side and decide from there, not be pushed toward replacement because the unit has a date on it.
