Heat pump not heating in Colorado: what is normal and what needs repair

Heat pumps behave differently from furnaces, and Colorado weather makes those differences more noticeable. Long run times or air that feels less intense than furnace heat can be perfectly normal. A home that steadily loses temperature is a different story.

Is it normal for a heat pump to blow air that does not feel very hot?

Yes. A heat pump heats with a longer, steadier stream of moderately warm air rather than the short, very hot bursts most people associate with a gas furnace. That difference is the design, not a fault.

What matters is the result inside the home. If the system runs for long periods but holds the thermostat setting and the house stays comfortable, the behavior is probably normal. If the indoor temperature keeps falling, it is not delivering enough useful heat and should be looked at.

Is frost on the outdoor unit normal?

A light layer of frost is normal in cold, damp conditions, and heat pumps run a defrost cycle to clear it. Persistent heavy ice that never clears is different. Worth a call when:

The outdoor coil becomes heavily encased in ice.

The system repeatedly enters defrost without clearing the buildup.

Heating performance drops noticeably at the same time.

The outdoor fan is not operating normally, or ice returns quickly after the unit appears to defrost.

Those symptoms can point to airflow, sensor, refrigeration or defrost-control faults. They are better diagnosed than guessed at.

Why does my heat pump run for so long?

Longer cycles can be normal, particularly as outdoor temperatures fall. The concern is long runtime combined with poor comfort, unusual energy use, frequent cycling, or a system that cannot reach the set temperature. Common causes include restricted airflow from a dirty filter or blocked return, outdoor-coil or defrost problems, thermostat or auxiliary-heat configuration, refrigeration faults, and sizing or installation issues that limit capacity.

When should I call for heat pump repair?

Call when the system is no longer doing its basic job, which is keeping the home comfortable without behaving strangely:

The home cannot reach or hold the thermostat setting.

The system short cycles, turning on and off repeatedly.

The outdoor unit stays heavily iced over.

You hear grinding, screeching or other new mechanical noises.

Heating or cooling stops completely, or performance changes suddenly in similar weather.
