This is the one repair that often is not worth doing. On an aging R-22 system, a failed compressor usually costs more over the next few years than a replacement. You get both numbers and you decide.
Because the system was charged off a generic sea-level chart instead of for Front Range elevation. Central air conditioning in Front Range homes is affected more than most people expect. That is the most common reason a perfectly healthy system still cools poorly here, and it is why homeowners get told they need a new system when what they needed was a correct setup.
At this elevation the air is thinner, so it carries less heat per cubic foot. Every charge and airflow number shifts with it. A system balanced for sea level is being asked to move heat it cannot reach.
Add the swing between a 95-degree afternoon and a 55-degree night, the cottonwood season that blankets every condenser coil in the metro, and hail that flattens the fins on an exposed unit, and you get failures that look identical from the thermostat but are nothing alike underneath.
The whole job is telling those apart before quoting anything. That is what 20 years in residential HVAC actually buys you, and it is why the person who diagnoses your system is the same person who repairs it.
